ABOUT AROUND THE SUFRAH

The Sufrah, a prevalent household item in Muslim homes in Kerala, was a round woven mat used to set the stage for communal meals. People would gather and share food around the Sufrah.

Our project, Around The Sufrah, draws inspiration from this cultural artifact. It is a participatory and collaborative visual research endeavour with the objective of archiving contributions of mostly mappila women from early 20th century.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS

The objective of Around The Sufrah is to construct an archive of micro-histories, of women. Through our research projects , we aspire to bring these underrepresented stories to a wider audience. We seek to challenge traditional historical perspectives by shedding light on the diverse and rich narratives of women who have played pivotal roles in shaping their communities. Through digital platforms and physical events and experiences, we aim to democratize the knowledge and understanding of these narratives.
